O levels

The debate about O levels will doubtless be played out in great detail in the media over the coming days, and in any case I haven’t the time to write about them at length. But I have one anecdote which is pertinent to the question of whether exams have been devalued.

When I was at school (and I did the last year of O levels, which was 1987), there was a requirement at my school that you had to pass (that is, get a C or above) four O levels in order to be allowed to go on to Sixth Form.

Last year, a newsletter to old boys stated that the requirement today to make that transition is the attainment of six grade As at GCSE.

Either the pupils have all got a lot cleverer, or….
